At Design Junction a few weeks ago I caught up with the lovely Marianne from Nordic Bliss. We got talking about the differences between British and Scandinavian homes and she told me how much she misses seeing house plants in interiors now she lives in the UK
I had to confess that I put myself in with the house plant haters. They seem a little bit sad and dated to me – all ’70s macramé and droopy spider plants. Straggling, dust-gathering, light-sapping, yellowing… depressing.

But because I trust Marianne’s taste, I thought I’d hit the web in search of house plant ideas with a twist to see if I could find something to convert me.
OK, so I think a nicely contained, straggle-free terrarium I could do – Fugu the goldfish had better watch his back! If you fancy having a go here’s a good terrarium how-to complete with suggestions for plants to try. I like the idea of a simple fern and moss combo best.

These dinky little succulents look nice and fresh too – no creepy plant limbs crawling over the windowsill here! And better still, succulent plants ‘thrive on neglect’ making them a perfect candidate for a lazy gardener like me.
And then, just when I thought I might’ve been converted…

I love a plant in the house . . . but I hate seeing them done bad and put in the wrong places – in places where they will just look decorative rather than actually live and grow. You should get a plant for the beauty and the pleasure of seeing it thrive.
I especially hate seeing them upside down, poor plants; maybe they’ll escape in the night and the residents of that house will wake up hanging from their feet. Do I sound like a psycho yet? Good. I bloody love plants.

I’m always completely amazed when you post about breeding baby plants (I expect that’s the wrong word, but you know what I mean!) – isn’t nature amazing…
In light of your comment I’m beginning to think terrariums are a bit cruel? What do you think?
It’s funny, me and my husband constantly discuss the houseplant issue:)
I am Swedish and used to having nice plants in the windows (you can also find very nice plant pots in Scandinavia and classic very nice plants), but my husband (English) does not like house plants… As soon as I have found a few more nice pots, there will be more plants in our home…;)
Haha – if only she was sitting under the fern on the right-hand side, hairdresser style!
I actually quite like the terrarium idea, especially the ones in the apothecary/sweetshop-style glass jars. Only problem is a distinct lack of surfaces for them…
